Accountability on Trial | A Spoiled Fruit Update

When allegations of abuse reach the courts, what responsibility do the institutions involved accept—and what happens when their legal defenses prevent claims from reaching trial?

In this update to Spoiled Fruit: Faith & Power, John Williamson returns to Duluth and examines additional civil cases involving Vineyard churches in Anaheim, Kansas, and Ohio.

Drawing on court filings, hearing transcripts, judicial orders, and public statements, we explore the distinction between defending against allegations, disputing institutional responsibility, and seeking dismissal based on legal deadlines.

We also revisit John Kliewer’s departure from Duluth, examine unanswered questions surrounding the Danny Meyer investigation, and consider where pastoral counseling should end and referral to a licensed mental-health professional should begin.

At the center of the episode is the question that shaped season one: Who holds spiritual leadership accountable when the systems meant to protect people fail?

Content note: This episode discusses sexual abuse allegations, clergy misconduct, and suicide. Graphic descriptions are avoided.
